"I've often heard the term 'all-mighty' used in japanese to describe a musician who can do it all, from jazz to rock to blues to noise to reggae to… you get the idea, well Imahori is one of these, and he does even more… he does it with style. Being one of the most interesting and talented guitarists in a nation of guitarists, he has work at one time or another with just about every musician on the Tokyo indies scene. His own band 'Tipographica' features his formidable compositional talents … … but it is his remarkable + original guitar playing that stands the fore here."
John Zorn Amsterdam 1993

TIPOGRAPHICA
"This band was created in a music school in 1986, by the guitarist Imahori Tsuneo, the saxophonist Kikuchi Naruyoshi, and the keyboard player Minakami Akira. At this stage, they did covers of Fred Frith and the Golden Palominos, the drummer Sotoyama joining them in 1989. Together they discovered ehtnic world music during an african tour, helping them to form their style, and taking musical instruments, such as jembes, back to Japan, which can be heard on the albums. The Frank Zappa era's string influence (Jaka Jawaka, One Size Fits All,…), with brass, marimba style percussion, guitar solos, changing rhythms, intimate or boiling, can be felt up until the last album, on which Tipographica finally seizes their stylistic independence. Percussion is still important, the saxophone screams like John Zorn's, and it is a dry jazz-rock, always instrumental and complex, that is now played by this grown up line up."
Extract from
